Yes, I know it’s not a mead, but it comes from a meadery so close enough to post on this site right?
The Slice of Life from B Nektar is a gluten-free hard cider with ginger and lemon. And it has both of those ingredients in spades. It pours a clear, very pale gold/yellow color. The appearance fits the ginger lemon ingredients. It’s carbonated with a burst of bubbles upon pouring then calms down almost immediately.
The carbonation helps release an enticing aroma of fresh ginger and lemon – spicy and citrusy. It’s immediately followed by sweet apple. The sip sits nicely on the tongue. Light bodied with soft carbonation. It’s crisp and refreshing.
The flavor is bright and spicy. Though the ginger is stronger on the aroma, the lemon leads the taste. The lemon zestiness is balanced with the apple sweetness. It’s like snapping into a fresh tart apple. It finishes with a ginger bite. Definitely a good summer sipper.
The cider is named after Dexter Morgan’s boat in the excellent showtime series “Dexter” but I feel like the references could be a little more subverted – presented with a wink and a nod. The writeup on the bottle hosts a plethora of blatant Dexter references.
A knife slices the skin of a lemon, the juice sprays out landing in a beautiful array on a plastic-wrapped table. Neat, little pieces of ginger join the dismembered lemon to be dumped overboard into a vast sea of apple cider. They deserve it. Precise, and with purpose, to make the world a better place. If it’s to be executed, it must fit the code. The trophy is in the bottle.
I like the reference in the name and imagery on the label, but this writeup is a little over the top. Then again, it is B Nektar. They developed a brand that is consistently hopping over that top with their label designs, mead and cider names, and ingredient choices. This cider is no different.
