The 2013 Mazer Cup International Mead Competition took place March 15 and 16 in beautiful, mead-loving city of Boulder, Colorado. The Mazer Cup is one of the world events that is responsible for letting the general public know that mead, the honey-based alcoholic beverage with an ancient and honorable pedigree, is making a comeback in a big way.
More than 500 home-made meads were entered in the home competition, and an astounding 350 commercially-made meads were assessed in the commercial mead category. What made this competition in both categories so exciting is that the winners came from a wide variety of mead-makers; this goes to show that there are not only two or three mead-makers of outstanding quality, more and more are arising every year. As mead becomes more and more popular, the number of superb mead companies is going to continue to increase, to the delight of consumers who are looking for alternatives to the everyday beverages of beer and wine.
In the commercial category, one mead-making company that certainly made a name for itself is Andre Abi Raad’s Intermiel. Intermiel’s marvellous meads won four categories and came in second in two; it furthermore won a bronze medal in one category. In the home competition, Marc Bivins of the GotMead meadmakers club won the Best of Show award for his Other Fruit Melamel (Sweet) category winning Orange Marmalade Mead. Below are the rest of the results, can’t wait to see how the turnout will be next year!

[…] This Mead Movement honors Rabbit’s Foot Meadery. Rabbit’s Foot was founded in 1995 by Michael and Maria Faul. They started exploring mead when Maria returned from a trip to Ireland with a bottle of mead purchased at the airport. They were intrigued by the taste and wanted to explore mead further, but couldn’t find any readily available. Michael decided to start experimenting with brewing his own. After 5 years of brewing in his garage, his skills became quite advanced so he and Maria decided to make a go at commercial production. Six years after they started, in 2001 Michael quit his day job and became a full-time mead-maker. Since then, their Mead has received many awards, including, most recently, a gold and silver in the Braggot category at the 2013 Mazer Cup. […]
